This is someone with many talents. He was born in England, honored in France, and a patriot/writer/ bridge builder in the American colonies.
His “Common Sense” pamphlet in 1776 expounds on exactly that: one man’s reasonable thoughts on what makes (or should make sense) for the common good of all. I think he may have relied on helpers in a “colonial Cosmic Office, Inc.” since he mentions thoughts “…that bolt into the mind of their own accord. I have always made it a rule to treat these voluntary visitors with civility, taking care to examine, as well as I was able, if they were worth entertaining; and it is from them I have acquired almost all of the knowledge that I have.” (referenced in “Cosmic Office Inc.” footnote 30)
Voluntary visitors! That may mean that help arrives naturally or automatically. A list of his many accomplishments includes patented inventions, diplomacy, and writing and speaking out on unpopular causes. He helped organize the Bank of North America to raise money for the American Revolutionary army, and much more.
I wonder if anyone is alive today with his sense of fairness (like voting for everyone–1793), outrage, and sheer guts.
